Review By: Alan Smethurst from cruisefinder.com.au Barcelona to Valencia July 2007

Why this particular cruise? An invitation to attend the Silversea gala dinner for the best selling travel agents of the cruise line in the world. An added bonus to see the Americas Cup in luxury.
Where did the cruise go? Not very far. From Barcelona down to Valencia and then in an out of port on race days. One day spent in Algiers proved an interesting experience. We left the port by coach for a day sightseeing under police escort that stopped the traffic to let us through and for the most day kept us apart from the locals who gave us a mixed reception. Lots of smiles and waves but the odd angry look and finger.
Did the ship measure up to your expectations? Certainly, but the Silversea ships are 6 star and have an excellent reputation. However, it was interesting to learn that the fleet of four ships will all get a facelift in the next two years and the company will launch a fifth ship in 2009.
What were the cabins like? The Silver Whisper is an all suite ship and the cabins offer the highest space-to-guest ratio of any fleet. Eighty per cent of the cabins have furnished teak verandas and feature fresh fruit and flowers, European bath amenities, Egyptian cotton bedding, spa robes and slippers, writing desk and personalised stationery, marble bathroom with shower and full-size bath. Certain higher class suites include complimentary butler service and laundry service, chocolate welcome, afternoon canapés, plasma TVs and Lavazza espresso maker.
What was the food like? Excellent. As an Italian owned ship there is a strong Italian flavour with specialty Italian dinners by reservation in La Terrazza and gourmet six-course fine dining in Le Champagne. I really enjoyed La Terrazza for lunch with the choice of a healthy salad, cooked meal or pasta with complimentary wines and I was more than satisfied with The Restaurant at night. Dine at any time you wish and alone or in company – the choice is yours. There were also poolside barbecues, 24-hours room service and poolside lunches. The ship also features cruiselite dining if you are watching your weight
What were ships’ facilities like? Good lounge facilities, theatre, one shop, casino, The Humidor for cigars and cognac and a spa and fitness centre. Silversea’s Wellness Program “promotes an enlightened attitude towards healthy living for a complete rejuvenation of mind, body and soul whilst at sea”. Some of the signature treatments include anti-aging facials, aromatherapy, micro-dermabrasion, tooth whitening and warm stone massage.
What was the best aspect of the ship/cruise? The personalised service, the most comfortable beds afloat and top class food.
Who would a Silversea cruise appeal to? People looking for a relaxing holiday in elegant surroundings with great service food and wine. Not really suitable for children.
Advice Keep a close eye on cruisefinder website because there are big savings to be had on many Silversea cruises sometimes up to 50 per cent off the brochure price.
Tip Hotel Claris in Barcelona was really enjoyable, a marvellous mix of old and new furnishings. In a good spot for shops and a great rooftop restaurant. Try the T bone steak (for a minimum of 2 people) carved at the table.
